Mauis dolphin are the smallest dolphins in the world.
Mauis and Hector's don't produce true whistles.
Almost all the sounds of Hector's and Maui's dolphins are short (1/7000 sec) high-frequency clicks centred on 125 kHz. There's essentially no audible component to these clicks - you can hear them only if you slow down the replay. Sometimes, however, the dolphins make these high-frequency clicks so rapidly that while you cannot hear the clicks themselves, you can hear the repetition rate. Engineers and physicists call this "time-separation-pitch". So, when the dolphin makes 600 clicks per second (which they can do easily), you hear a tone of 600 Hz. Sometimes this sounds like a kind of squeal. To show that this is made of high-requency clicks, you need to record it with gear that can record past 150kHz. (Steve Dawson)
